Her story in Focus - a fundraiser for the Downtown Eastside Women's Center

The fourth annual Herstory in Focus aims to raise $50,000 for the Drop-in Centre and meal program, which provides over 500 meals every day to women in need. As the sole low-barrier drop-in space in the Downtown Eastside for women, DEWC provides invaluable sanctuary in a highly marginalized community with the meal program serving as the entry point to the Centre and to a continuum of care.

Herstory highlights the empowerment of the women through an inspiring fashion show, while raising support for DEWC’s ongoing work. Join us on November 1st as we honour and celebrate the many herstories of strength and resilience in our community.

"A Tavola Non Si Invecchia!” (at the table you don't get old) -- a conversation about death

IMG_1099.jpeg

You are invited to an unforgettable evening of art, games, Italian food & conversations about death if you can believe it

The evening is a art fundraiser using the "Death Conversation Game" fashioned by local artist Angela Fama as a conversation facilitation tool. Angela created the Death Conversation Game project to help us help ourselves break out of the normative structures that surround narratives on death. Personal death is a topic that’s often avoided in social settings. If you would like to change that, this game's for you! The object of the game is to instigate open conversations on death in a safe, respectful environment with chosen friends, family, classmates, colleagues and/or strangers - which you will do over dinner at this supper club!

Don't be afraid, step out of your normal comfort zone and join us for a chat. The depth and breadth of the conversation will depend on you. Whether it's death related theology, ideology, metaphysics, bookish details, relationship considerations, bereavement, and/or a number of other subjects…

LET THE CONVERSATIONS BEGIN!

Aaaand, let’s be cozy while we are doing this. So... bring on the comfort food! Chef Heather Dosman (Existential Eating Co.) will create an Italian dinner for us.

Menu teasers: Fennel & orange marinated olives. Zucchini, kale & pecorino salad. Handmade rosemary & garlic focaccia. Wild Porcini risotto. Sbrisolana (Italian almond polenta cake, cream, seasonal fruit).

Proceeds from the event will go to a printing run of the Death Card Game to encourage more people to take part in this very important human discussion.

Cha Kaiseki inspired collaboration dinner with Swallowtail supper club

Existential Eating is collaborating with Swallowtail supper club for a special Cha kaiseki inspired dinner at Grapes & Soda February 24! There will be a pescatarian and vegan option for this dinner and a very limited number of seats so reserve your tickets ASAP! Stay tuned for ticket release on this one!

The meaning of the word “kaiseki” is banquet so we are designing an elegant evening to celebrate of the beautiful food that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. It is traditionally very important to prepare the food thoughtfully, respecting and bringing out the flavours of each ingredient to bring them together without overpowering anything.

Taking inspiration from the traditional Cha Kaiseki ceremony we will be serving a 6 course meal ending with traditional Japanese matcha. The goal of the meal is to prepare your stomach for the tea (which will not sit well on an empty or full stomach) so you can enjoy the ceremony and Omotenashi (thoughtful service & the best treats for the guests.) We will be serving sake and beer as well throughout the dinner.

She moved to Vancouver in 2004 and has worked with many wonderful Vancouver restaurants like the Pourhouse, The Acorn and Cacao (to name a few.)
